Wine List

We are delighted to introduce our wine list, which has been arranged in a descriptive style, rather than the traditional way of region by region. Hopefully this will make wine selection easier, and by informing customers how less familiar wines taste, it should also encourage people to try new wines rather than just going for the well known 'brand' regions like Rioja or Sancerre (not that there's anything wrong with that – we have seriously good examples from both regions!).

There is obviously an element of subjectivity in this style of list, as 'medium bodied red' might not mean the same to everyone, and there are arguably some wines which could be on either side of the fence, but largely we feel it is fairly accurate and with that in mind hope that you will enjoy perusing the list and be rewarded with a splendid selection.

Some of our wines would benefit from being decanted, if you would like your wine decanting please bring it to the attention of the staff.

All the wines in this list are supplied by Bowland Forest Vintners, our wine merchants who have their wine shop in the front of the hotel. Now in their 40th year of trading they have a wonderful selection of fine and interesting wines from around the world. All wines chosen are from real winemakers who concentrate on real quality, rather than mass produced 'factory farm' wines. Bowland Forest Vintners offer first rate advice, and back it up with very friendly and efficient service.

N.B. We would like to advise that vintages could be liable to change within this list. Whilst we try our best, sometimes we get caught out and therefore we would like to advise that vintages within this list are normally correct and only sometimes wrong!

Wines by the Glass

Wines marked with a 'C' are served by Coravin, a device which allows the wine to be poured without extracting the cork, thereby keeping the wine in the bottle fresh and protected from oxygen. This means we can serve the finest quality wines by the glass. Prices below are for a 125ml glass.

Champagne and Sparkling

Gallimard Cuvée Reserve, Brut N.V. — £12.00

100% Pinot Noir, fantastically clean and fresh made in the rounded Gallimard style with a soft, elegant finish.

Recommendations – Aperitif, smoked salmon

Tallero Prosecco Spumante DOC Treviso Extra Dry — £7.50

Delightfully fresh sparkling wine from Northern Italy. Crisp and fresh with lovely citrus and apple characters, it has a mouth-filling roundness which is delightful.

White Wines

Pinot Grigio 2024, Tre Colonne, Veneto (Italy) — £4.75

Fresh and crisp, it has gorgeous aromas of pears and apples and a full flavour and pronounced fruit.

Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Pacifico Sur, Curico Valley (Chile) — £4.75

Wonderfully crisp with a zingy palate of tropical fruits. Grassy and fresh, this wine offers more than many may expect from Chilean Sauvignon. Really enjoyable.

Recommendations – Salads and fish dishes.

Chenin Blanc 2024 'The Bear', Voor-Paardeberg (South Africa) — £5.25

Chenin Blanc is South Africa's leading grape & this particular one is ideal with or without food. This is a charming fruit forward Chenin Blanc, with pronounced aromas of stone fruit and melon a gorgeous aroma and a long finish.

Recommendations – Salads, white meats, fish

Riesling 'Essence' 2024, S A Prüm, Mosel (Germany) — £5.75

This is what you would expect from top quality Riesling. A delicious wine, with a fresh, zesty nose and a mouth-watering, fruity palate. It is medium dry, and very more-ish!

Recommendations – White meats, spicy dishes

Picpoul de Pinet 2024, Dom. Villa Croix (Languedoc) — £5.75

Having shed its' 'Muscadet of the south' tag Picpoul de Pinet now stands on its' own feet and continues to clean up in the dry white stakes. Villa des Croix is one of the very best. Fresh and lemony, this is a dry white that everyone can get along with perfectly.

Recommendations – Salads, fish, especially shellfish

Le Paradou Viognier, Ch. Pesquié 2025, Rhone Valley — £6.00

Aromatic and alluring, beautiful apricot and peach flavours abound, and the fruit on the palate lingers on and on….. The number in the name is the road which takes you to the vineyard….you can't deny the French are romantic!! Nevertheless, the wine speaks for itself. Fantastic bang for buck!

Recommendations – White fish, shellfish and white meat

Chardonnay Gran Reserva 2024, Nostros, Casablanca Valley (Chile) — £6.75

If anybody is still dragging their feet when it comes to getting back onto the Chardonnay bandwagon, just point them at this little gem. Winds off the Pacific keep the vineyards cool thereby slowing ripening. The result is a Chardonnay of mouth watering freshness and elegance. Barrel fermented for extra complexity.

Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Staete Landt, Marlborough (NZ) — £6.75

Staete Landt is the name given to what is now New Zealand by Tasman, the Dutch explorer in honour of his country. This is Marlborough Sauvignon at its best. Wonderfully fresh and powerful on the nose this is an intense wine with bags of zesty gooseberry, passion fruit and citrus fruit and great concentration of flavour.

Recommendations – Aperitif, goat's cheese, seafood

Saint Véran 2024, Dom. Michel Chavet (Burgundy) — £8.50

Fine quality from southern Burgundy. From vines which are at least 35 years old, this unwooded Chardonnay is all about the fruit. Lovely flavours of white flowers, white peach and citrus.

Recommendations – Pork and Chicken dishes, fish

C Meursault 'Maxim' 2023, Dom. Latour-Guiraud, Burgundy — £22.00

A beautifully classic Meursault nose of orchard and citrus fruit, a little freshness, and a hint of gingerbread. It has a pleasing mineral aspect, with a little extra salinity and mouth-watering acidity. Good balance between fruit and oak, this is sensational Burgundy.

C Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru 'Macherelles' 2023, Dom. Thomas Morey, Burgundy — £25.00

The Morey family have been growing grapes in Burgundy for over 200 years. Medium bodied it has wonderful texture with white flower, apple, citrus and honey flavours. Less new oak is used, with the focus on purity and tension. Now opening up brilliantly, this is superb 1er Cru Burgundy.

C Condrieu 'Les Chaillets' 2022, Cave Yves Cuilleron (Rhone) — £24.00

100% Viognier from the world famous AOC in the Northern Rhone, where Cuilleron owns 75 hectares. This is his old vine cuvée named after local terraces. Lingering and rich it is a meal in itself.

Rose Wines

Castillo del Moro Tempranillo Shiraz Rose 2024 — Spain — £4.75

Full flavoured and ripe. Tasty flavours of summer berries, it is a pleasure to knock back, morning, noon and night! Top value too.

Recommendations – Aperitif, salads

Hostelliere 'Pieds de Taille' 2024, Cotes de Provence — £5.75

Classic Provence rose with a charming pale pink colour and with aromas of summer fruits, it is pure elegance in a glass. Despite its' very pale hue it has good weight and goes amazingly well with many foods. Massively popular.

Recommendations – Aperitif, salads, seafood

Red Wines

Merlot 2023, Pacifico Sur, Central Valley (Chile) — £4.75

It is so easy to drink, lots of plum characters with touches of mocha. Classic Chilean Merlot. Just the job!

Recommendations – Stews, pork dishes

Cotes du Rhone Reserve de Fleur 2023 — £5.25

Cracking little wine from the Southern Rhone, made using mostly Syrah, with just a dash of old vine Grenache. A good balance between dark berry fruits and black pepper spice. It is unoaked and unfiltered which adds texture and weight whilst the finish is long.

Recommendations – red meats, pasta, cheese

Rioja Tinto Crianza 2021, Palacio de Otoño, Rioja (Spain) — £5.50

All the grace and silkiness you could want from a Rioja. Lots of cherry, plum and spicy flavours combined with hints of vanilla from 6 months of aging in American oak, and elegant tannins add to the finish.

Recommendations – Roast beef, lamb, cheeses

Malbec 2024, Gavelot, Pays Herault (Languedoc) — £5.50

Delicious Malbec from S. France. Vibrant purple in the glass, with intense aromas of plums and blackberries. The palate is smooth, with flavours of dark cherries and chocolate.

Recommendations – Grilled Sirloin, Roast Beef, plain and simple!

3rd Generation Shiraz 2024, Nugan Estate (South East Aus.) — £5.75

Deep purple in appearance with youthful crimson hues. Lifted ripe berry fruit aromas, with hints of earth, pepper and dark chocolate complimented by sweet red berry fruit flavours with spice and silky tannin finish.

Recommendations – Meat. Redder the better.

Chateau Le Bedat 2021, Bordeaux Supérieur — £6.50

Soft, juicy and ripe is not always a description you would expect from a Bordeaux. Lovely cassis characters and charming nose, this is a really good value wine.

Pinot Noir 2021, Grace Bridge (California) — £7.50

A spectacularly easy to drink, juicy Pinot from Monterey. Fresh summer fruit flavours with aromas of strawberries, red cherries together with a lovely savoury aspect.

Recommendations – A perfect wine for game or duck.

C Guidalberto 2021, Tenuta San Guido, Toscana IGT (Italy) — £18.00

The 2nd wine of Sassiacaia and is very much a chip off the old block! 60/40 Cab Merlot blend and is very Bordeaux-like in style, with cassis, balsamic and dark cherry flavours. Really opening out now and offers wonderful value.

C Gevrey Chambertin, Domaine Coillot 2022 (Burgundy) — £22.00

Serious quality from the famous appellation in Cotes de Nuits. Silky, smooth yet powerful glass of wine. Summer fruit combined with a savoury edge and the classic 'fruits of the forest' brambly character. Really good flavours and perfect with game or duck.

Recommendations – A perfect wine for game, duck or lamb

C Kay Brothers Hillside Shiraz 2005, McLaren Vale — £20.00

100% Shiraz with all vines well over 20 years old. Incredibly intense and concentrated with plum, dark berry and liquorice fruit, black pepper spice, ripe tannins and mid-palate richness with underlying oak complexity.

Recommendations – beef, beef and more beef.

C 1996 Chateau Haut Batailley, 5ème Pauillac — £25.00

Quintessential Pauillac nose with dominant black fruits, black cherry and hints of liquorice and shoe polish. In the glass it is fulsome with lovely sweetness and wonderful ripe length. A pleasure to drink, 1996 is a great vintage for Haut Batailley.

Recommendations – beef, lamb, game

Dessert Wine

Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setúbal 2022 (Portugal) — 75ml £4.50

Enticing Muscat aromas and delicious 'raisiny' flavours. A great way to finish off your meal.

Recommendations – Sticky toffee pudding!

C Chateau Filhot 2001, 2ème Cru Classé, Sauternes — 75ml £10.00

Full bodied and as rich as you'd wish for, it has dollops of vanilla custard and brioche characters along with mouth-watering orange and apricot scent.

Recommendations – Tarts, pies, puddings and fruit dishes.

Red Bordeaux – in vintage order

152 — 2009 Chateau Cantemerle, Haut Médoc — £90.00

Excellent wine from one of the Inn's favourite Houses. Offering true value. A ripe and full vintage yet Cantemerle has produced a wine of outstanding elegance.

210 — 2009 Chateau du Tertre, 5ème Cru Margaux — £105.00

Classically Margaux in character with an elegant feel about it. The nose if stashed with dark berry and cassis flavours together with hints of liquorice and pen ink. The palate is fairly opulent and round whilst the tannins have softened. This is a great du Tertre drinking superbly!

122 — 2008 Chateau Lynch Bages, 5ème Cru Pauillac — £188.00

A sensational effort for the vintage, this textured, opulent, superb Lynch Bages is already strutting its stuff and should easily last for 20 years. Medium to full-bodied with an opaque dense purple colour, notes of flowers and cassis, a layered texture that builds incrementally in the mouth and tremendous purity and depth. — Robert M. 150 — 2005 Chateau Duhart Milon, 4ème Cru Pauillac — £145.00

An estate under the umbrella of Domaines Barons de Rothschild, it has great pedigree and this is a fine example. Bold and powerful, reflecting the vintage, it has gorgeous blackcurrant flavours underpinned by tobacco, pencil shavings. Weighty yet balanced, it opens out wonderfully in the glass.

112 — 2002 Chateau Gruaud Larose, 2ème Cru Saint Julien — £135.00

A name which is synonymous with highest quality Bordeaux and whenever we find some this Chateau is first on the team sheet! Pleasingly forward, it has now dis-robed itself of any lingering tannins and is showing delicate fruit and savoury aspects with hints of leather and smoke.

387 — 2003 Chateau Chasse Spleen, Moulis — £100.00

Lovely consistent Chateau which never fails to deliver great value. Cabernet dominant wine, it has power and finesse in equal measure. Lingering fruit, twenty years on there is still much to offer.

175 — 1999 Chateau Monbousquet, Grand Cru Saint Emilion — £95.00

Text book right bank claret, dominated by Merlot. Powerful and round, it still has plenty of dark cherry and blackberry flavours, and the more mature and savoury characteristics of forest floor, tobacco and cedar are coming to the fore.

945 — 1998 Chateau Palmer, 3ème Cru Margaux — £250.00

If ever they re-do the Bordeaux classifications, Palmer is undoubtedly going to be repositioned on the top table and 1998 is a perfect example of why. A true classic, it is a vintage when Merlot took lead vocals (52%) providing exceptional velvety complexity. Very deep garnet colour. Smoky spicy aromas with some sweaty saddles, cloves and white pepper complimenting the core of warm cassis.

202 — 1996 Chateau Kirwan, 3ème Cru Margaux — £110.00

Still full of fruit with hints of plum and cassis flavours on the nose whilst the palate is still full of weight and holds up very well over a couple of hours easily. True to form, this Margaux is gentle and silky and matches roast game extremely well.

130 — 1996 Chateau Haut Batailley, 5ème Pauillac — £120.00

205 — 1994 Chateau Leoville Barton, 2ème Cru Saint Julien — £125.00

Without doubt one of the finest Houses in the Médoc, consistently producing spectacular wine. Medium bodied and elegant, still with masses of blackcurrant and cherry fruit, with hints of tobacco, sandalwood and a touch of mint. A true gem (and a complete 'steal' at this price!)

297 — 1988 Chateau Batailley, 5ème Cru Pauillac — £125.00

Quintessential Pauillac nose with dominant black fruits, black cherry and hints of liquorice and shoe polish, together with tertiary characters of leather and cigar box. In the glass it is a gorgeous garnet colour and is silky with lovely sweetness and wonderful ripe length. A pleasure to drink, 1988 is a very good vintage for Batailley.

Rhone Valley and Southern France

415 — Chateauneuf du Pape 'Clos du Papes' 2000, Rhone Valley — £175.00

Grenache based wine with aromas of truffles, sweet cherry, and kirsch. Medium bodied, quite fulsome and smooth with layered tannins and spicy finish. Seriously, it is a wine you cannot put down! Absolutely at its' peak..!

370 — Mas de Daumas Gassac 1985, Vins de Pays de L'Hérault — £200.00

Amazingly this icon of a wine is only now opening up to show its' true depth and beauty. Founded in the 1970s it is a blend of red varieties dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (unusual in this region). It is obviously mature in character with leather and cedar aromas, however the fruit is very much in evidence and the finish is a lingering, silky one.

Italy

397 — Tenuta del Terriccio 'Lupicaia' 1998 — Tuscany — £130.00

The term 'Super Tuscan' is seen quite often now, whenever a producer uses Bordeaux varietals in their blends. Seldom does it work quite as well as this sexy beast. 1998 was a fabulous vintage with low yields giving concentrated, weighty wines which offer great richness of fruit. With some age, this wine has lost none of its' jaw dropping power and will match most red meat dishes perfectly.

339 — Brunello di Montalcino 1999, Fuligni — Tuscany — £145.00

Absolutely traditional yet exquisite example of this iconic style from a very fine vintage. Allowed to open in the glass, the nose is classically dusty and lifted with cherries, leather and earthy, whilst the palate quite complex, with good weight and power with ripe tannins and decent acidity. This finish is long and lingering.

555 — Sassicaia 2007, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri Tuscany — £390.00

(85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc) The wine is deep in colour with subtle notes of plum, blackcurrant and vanilla on the nose. On the palate intense ripe Cassis flavours and precise mineral qualities dominate - Poised, very long and elegant. World class - this is a brilliant Sassicaia, drinking superbly. Bold yet beautiful.

Spain

481 — 2009 San Roman, Bodegas y Viñedos Maurodos, Toro — £85.00

A powerful, concentrated Toro from old vines, rich in dark fruit with firm structure and long potential. Highly rated by the Wine Advocate.

478 — 2015 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva '904', Rioja — £150.00

A classic, traditional Rioja Gran Reserva with notes of vanilla, dried fruit and leather from extended oak ageing. Silky tannins and a long, elegant finish.

Australia

648 — Kay Brothers Hillside Shiraz 2005 — £88.00

A rich, full-bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz with dark berry fruit, spice and a firm, structured finish.

649 — Parker Estate Terra Rossa 'First Growth' Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 — £110.00

A powerful Coonawarra Cabernet from terra rossa soil, with concentrated blackcurrant fruit, cedar and firm tannins.

668 — Henschke 'Cyril' Cabernet 1998 — £150.00

A benchmark Eden Valley Cabernet, deep and concentrated with cassis, dark chocolate and fine, long-lasting tannins.

Champagne

113 — Gallimard Père et Fils Cuvée Reserve, Brut N.V. — £56.50

A modern hand-made Champagne made from 100% Pinot Noir, grown by the Gallimard family themselves. This allows them to control the quality and price of the fruit which few other producers are able to do. Clean and fresh style with a soft, elegant finish.

954 — Gallimard Père et Fils Cuvée Reserve, Brut N.V. — Magnum £120.00

114 — Gallimard Père et Fils Rosé, Brut N.V. — £75.00

100% Pinot Noir from fruit grown in the Gallimard vineyards. Bright partridge-eyed rosé in colour with soft red fruit aromas with a gentle mousse and a fleshy finish. A fine aperitif but with enough body and character to accompany sea-fish and poultry.

115 — Champagne Devaux 'Cuvée D' Brut N.V. — £80.00

Made using a solera system and aged for 5 years, using strict selection of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. It has sensational aromas of white flowers, flavours of brioche and vanilla, nuts and hints of honey. Subtle and elegant, it has a fine mousse, superb weight and long finish.

118 — Pol Roger 'White Foil' Brut N.V. — £88.00

This was Sir Winston Churchill's favourite due to the greater use of reserve wines in the final blend, which is made from equal amounts of each of the three Champagne grapes. An exquisite wine which exhibits slight Burgundian mealy notes, with a cleansing silky finish.

149 — Pol Roger 'White Foil' Brut N.V. — Magnum £175.00

109 — Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé N.V. — £115.00

Its' reputation is enhanced with every bottle opened. Made from 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Salmon pink in colour. Bold and elegant, dry and biscuity, yet bursting with ripe strawberries.

119 — Ruinart Blanc de Blancs N.V. — £120.00

Founded in 1729, Ruinart was the very first Champagne House. Their Blanc de Blancs includes some 25–30 different chardonnay crus. The wine spends the best part of a decade or more on lees before disgorgement, showing beautiful integration and maturity balanced by a core of refined minerality. Citrus, peach and white flower aromas evolve into a fresh and supple palate.

140 — Pol Roger Vintage 2015 — £150.00

True to form Pol have produced another awesome vintage Champagne. Dominated by Pinot Noir, it's beautifully rich with gorgeous fresh baked bread aromas and stone fruit flavours, framed with the elegance that has become the signature of this great house. An exquisite glass.

101 — Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Vintage 2018 — £250.00

Created in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, Pol Roger only produce this very special cuvée in the very best vintages. The exact blend is a specially guarded secret but includes both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Grand Cru sites. Full bodied, rich and long, it is very expressive with flavours of peach and almonds.

Sparkling Wine

218 — Tallero Prosecco Spumante DOC Treviso Extra Dry, Veneto — £32.50

Delightfully fresh sparkling wine from the Northern Italian region of Veneto. Crisp and fresh with lovely citrus characters.

133 — Biscardo 'Millesimato' Rosé Prosecco DOC, Veneto — £36.50

Lovely tasting Prosecco with 15% Pinot Nero adding to the 85% Glera. Pretty to the eye, pretty on the nose, drinking superbly.

134 — Cattin 'Sauvage' N.V. Crémant d'Alsace, Joseph Cattin — £42.50

80% Pinot Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, 100% organic. From a family who have been producing wine for over 200 years. A lovely dry wine with tiny bubbles and a beautiful toasty brioche character. The perfect aperitif, it will also go very well with white meats, shellfish and seafood.

195 — Furleigh Estate Classic Cuvée Brut 2017, Dorset, Méthode Traditional — £58.00

Made very much in the style of the sparkling wine from N. France, it has a pretty nose of apple blossom and hints of grapefruit and lemon. A beautiful, long finish and a tiny mousse, it is a joy to drink.

147 — Squerryes 2020 Rosé, Westerham, Kent — £85.00

25% Pinot Meunier, 75% Pinot Noir handpicked from Kent's wonderful North Downs. Fermented in stainless steel and kept on its' lees for 24 months, it has a delightful strawberry and redcurrant nose and creamy red fruit palate balanced with good acidity.

Rose Wines

552 — 'Majoli' Rosato 2024, Tenute Sella, Coste della Sesia, Italy — £42.50

Piedmont Rosé is unusual enough, Nebbiolo exceptionally so. From high in the foothills of northern Piedmont, elegant and fine, it has all the hallmarks of the variety, hints of rose petals, wafts of red berries. It really is a joy to drink and has the weight to match lighter style foods, salads as well as being a stunning aperitif.

346 — Sancerre Rosé 2024, Domaine Dezat, Loire — £52.50

A wonderful alternative for an aperitif or a perfect choice to go with fish. From Pinot Noir grapes, it is delicate yet complex with hints of summer berry fruit. Simply delicious!

Light and Crisp Whites

500 — Antonello Cassara Grillo 2024, Sicily — £29.00

Handpicked, 100% Grillo, fermented in stainless steel. Fresh and zippy with aromas of peach, apricot and white flowers. It has very good weight and length and it goes perfectly with antipasti style foods, as well as seafood …well it is Sicilian!

455 — Vinho Verde DOC 2024, Adega Guimaraes, Portugal — £29.00

Adega Guimaraes co-operative support over 250 winegrowers in the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. Light and crisp with a hint of that traditional Vinho Verde tingle. Elegant and fresh, it's ideal with anything fishy from the ocean.

Downstream from the famous Villages of Sancerre and Pouilly comes this wonderfully expressive, zesty Sauvignon with gorgeous crisp flavours on both nose and palate which make your mouth water just to think about them! As a drink on its' own or with food, it is a delight.

100% Verdejo, El Empecinado is a charming wine, dry with elegant aromas of peach, pear, green apple, grapefruit, together with hints of white flowers. The palate is round and balanced with pleasing acidity and lengthy finish. It is a very good partner for seafood dishes of the Atlantic as well as being a wonderful aperitif.

From a lovely family run winery in Montespertoli dedicated to the heritage of the region and reintroduction of local varieties. 'Bonsalto' is a blend of mostly Sangiovese with some Colorino and a 5% splash of Malvasia Nera. Incredibly drinkable, it is fresh and floral with juicy red berry fruit and lovely ripe acidity.

An archetypal Gran Reserva from this prestigious house. Tempranillo 90%, Garnacha 5% and Mazuelo 5%. Layer after layer of cranberry, cherry, chocolate bitters, herbs like thyme and rosemary all wrapped in soft tannins and vanilla from the oak.

Made from a blend of Portuguese varietals, it is gorgeously ripe with dark berries, plums and damsons on the nose together with hints of cedar and spices. The palate is fulsome and round, use of oak is gentle and the tannins are smooth.

Owned by Ch. Pavie this is a classic 'Right Bank' style claret with most of the fruit coming from the Saint Emilion and Castillon districts, largely Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the mix. Gorgeous wafts of blueberries, violets and dark berries whilst the palate is a warm and velvety combo of dark chocolate, cedar and spice.

A delicious claret from a fine vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape (60%) in this classic Bordeaux blend. Elegant and stylish, it is not a cutlass, rather an épée and has blackcurrant and cedar flavours and is unmistakably Médoc.

80% Merlot reminds us this is indeed from the Pomerol plateau, home to some of the best right bank clarets. A fruit forward nose of cassis, cherry and tobacco, backed up with a weighty yet balanced palate and long finish. Already drinking superbly, the longer it's in the glass the more joy you get! Superb quality and awesome value, made by Jean Baptiste Lebreuil in the north end of Cote de Beaune. Soft and subtle, silky and smooth, the aromas of cherries and wild berries combine with earthy characteristics to make this very quaffable Burgundy.

The 2nd wine of Ch. Haut Bages Liberal which neighbours such esteemed Chateaux. as Latour, Pichon Baron and Grand Puy Lacoste. Using younger vines, offering a forward, accessible Pauillac for early drinking. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot, the 2016 is a delicious wine with delightful aromas of blackcurrants, plums, cedar and hints of tobacco with a palate expressing dark berry fruit with spice and liquorice.

Very interesting to have the 3rd wine of Ch. Margaux on the list. A delicate violet floral and fruity nose gives way to a smooth and gentle mouthfeel. Decanting gives full benefit to this wine of great pedigree.

One of the most respected domaines in Cote de Nuits, it is now in the hands of the 4th generation since being set up after WW1 by Henri Gouges himself. This vintage includes a number of 1er Cru plots. Extremely attractive bouquet of brambles, dark berries and autumn fruits whilst the palate has lovely weight of flavour with good acidity. Now really opening up it is a delicious glass of Burgundy.

This is somewhat of a baby Barolo (but a little more polite to your wallet!). 100% Nebbiolo, deep red in colour, with enticing wild strawberry and cherry notes, hints of orange peel and star anise. It has a ripe, smooth and silky finish.

From the high altitude Uco Valley region of Mendoza. A vibrant fresh and fruit driven Malbec made with very low intervention. Aged in old and neutral oak, the nose is gorgeously aromatic with heaps of plum, cherry and violets, whilst the palate is pleasingly juicy with good acidity and gentle tannins.

90% Sangiovese and 10% local varieties, this wonderful Chianti comes from old vines in the heart of the Classico region. Fresh and vibrant, this is absolutely quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Massive amounts of juicy dark fruit along with spicy black pepper aromas. A wine with real backbone and absolutely wonderful with most red meats and game.

This highly consistent House never lets us down. It opens up beautifully and offers hints of cassis flavours and cigar box aromas, it is a superb partner for lamb or game. The longer it is open the more seductive it becomes, definitely worth decanting for maximum enjoyment.

Deep, juicy, rich and structured. It is unfiltered to maintain weight and depth. Great value.

984 — Dow's 1983 — £135.00

As good as the reviews all suggest. This is another top notch effort from arguably the best Port House. Gorgeous dark berry fruit flavours are very much in evidence and this fabulous wine is now opening up to show magnificent depth and length.

844 — Quinta do Noval 1963 — £180.00

From a sensational vintage, and 60 years down the track it is still drinking superbly. It still has masses of sweet summer fruit flavours as well as firm backbone with great acidity. Silky and smooth, it's the ultimate way to end dinner.

Dessert Wine

891 — Dom. des Baumard 'Carte d'Or' Coteaux du Layon 2018 (Loire Valley) — 37.5cl £32.50

Delightful dessert style from Anjou in the Loire Valley, using Chenin Blanc. Hints of tropical fruit with pineapples and mangoes yet it has lovely balance between crisp acidity and rich sweetness without being cloying.

843 — Chateau Filhot 2001, 2ème Cru Classé, Sauternes — £85.00

This example is outstanding and exceptional value for such a top vintage. Full bodied and as rich as you'd wish for, it has dollops of vanilla custard and brioche characters along with mouth-watering orange and apricot scent.
